Have Questions?
View our most frequently asked questions below
Do you accept insurance?
Yes, we are credentialed with Kaiser and HMSA. We will work with them to determine how many hours of ABA therapy your child will receive. ABA Therapy is deemed medically necessary. We strongly encourage families to contact their insurance companies in order to have a better understanding of coverage and copays.
Do you accept private-pay clients?
Yes! Our services are available to anyone in need. Contact us and we will work with you to give you our rates
How does scheduling work?
We utilize block scheduling to foster a classroom environment for our learners.
Our blocks are from 8-11, 11:30-2:30, and 2:30-5:30.
Pick up is 15 minutes before the end of each block. At intake, our clinicians will review the amount of allotted hours that were determined medically necessary for your child, and determine a regular schedule for your family.
Kuleana Care requires a minimum of 50% of designated hours to be met each week, in order to best meet your child’s needs.
Does Kuleana Care only provide ABA therapy to individuals with autism?
No, Applied Behavior Analysis has been shown to be effective for a wide range of populations. However, most insurance clients in Hawaii require a medical diagnosis of Autism in order to cover the cost of services.
When is the best age to start ABA therapy?
Research shows early intervention is best in order to obtain the best possible outcomes for your child. If you haven’t started yet, it’s not too late! ABA can still be effective at other ages.
In what settings does Kuleana Care provide services?
Kuleana Care provides ABA therapy primarily at our clinic in Kihei. What works best for each child and family varies depending on several factors. Due to the number of hours allotted to each child individually, each child’s day will look different. Children needing ABA therapy benefit from receiving therapy in the clinical settings first, then moving to other locations (e.g. home and community) as he/she masters skills and behaviors decrease.
Does my child need ABA therapy if he/she is already on an IEP at school?
The curriculum and teaching procedures used at Kuleana Care’s ABA program tend to be more individualized and intensive than those typically utilized in a school setting. Additionally, public schools generally focus more on a student’s academic needs. Because we operate from a clinical standpoint, we are able to address a wide range of skills including social skills training, toilet training, hygiene routines, community skills, functional life skills, and other daily activities as well as targeting individual behavioral concerns.
We at Kuleana Care believe that our services, in addition to school programming, can help your child reach his or her full potential.
I’m looking for an outside Behavior Analyst to consult on my child’s education team. Can Kuleana Care help?
Yes, our behavior analysts are highly trained in school consultation and support. Upon your request and informing your child’s school team, we are happy to attend your child’s IEP meetings, assist with assessment and intervention development, and/or provide consultation to your child’s education team. We believe it is vital for all individuals working with your child to collaborate and work together to ensure interventions are consistent and effective across all settings.
What does therapy look like?
Before therapy begins, Kuleana Care will complete a comprehensive evaluation of your child’s skillset. This process starts with an initial meeting with caregivers and the Behavior Analyst, then we conduct an assessment of current skill functioning. This may include conducting a Functional Behavior Assessment and a Skill-based Assessment. Our focus is to identify how your child learns best, what motivates your child, and identify any problem behaviors that need to be addressed. This assessment is usually performed across multiple visits, and involves interviews, direct observations, and interaction with the client.
Next, the Behavior Analyst writes the report based on the assessments conducted and targets/goals are created and submitted to the funding source. Treatment hours and goals are then authorized by the funding source. Once this happens, The Behavior Analyst will meet with the caregiver to discuss the results of the assessment, authorized hours, and to plan a regular schedule.
Finally, ABA treatment is provided by either a Registered Behavior Technician (under the supervision of a Board Certified Behavior Analyst) or directly by a Behavior Analyst. Family participation and involvement in treatment is necessary to support the effectiveness of the treatment plan.
Caregiver training is used to educate caregivers to implement strategies and support your child in the home and community environments. It is generally recommended within the treatment plan and it is expected that caregivers participate.
My child attends school within the Baldwin-Kekaulike-Maui Complex. Can my child be transported to the Kuleana Care Center or Club?
Many schools in Kahului and Kihei will transport clients directly to our center after school. Please contact the school district to communicate your request.
